The initiation of "How To" of Computers...

At the chance of sounding a tad bit philosophical, we'd say, Computers! Computers!! Computers!!!, have really been a part of our daily lives for a long! long!! and a very long!!! time. Although, in the beginning, computers, as the name suggests, were meant to be little more than calculators, slightly complex computing devices with a lot of electronic widgets enough to resemble a common mans living room. The sheer size of the computer, a cumulative of innovations added to it, such as the binary mode of communication by Lady Ada Lovelace, lots of vacuum tubes and transistors. Those transistors have now been nano-sized to be fabricated on to silicon chips. Leaving the history behind, those are the things of the past!

What lives and works today is silicon chips on which the house sized computers are reduced into finger nail sizes. Then there was the Moore's law, chips will keep getting faster by twice of their original capacity times every two year as the number of transistors which has been a fact till date. With the computer becoming faster, multiple and new computing application avenues are opening up. What was once a slightly complex device is now an ubiquitous machine, that has been put to use into all kinds of industries. Name any industry and there is some or the other use of a Computer in some or the other way. Applications ranging from basic word processing inventory management to high processor intensive applications like graphic processing also called rendering, flight simulations for training, weather forecasting, etc.

With such wise range of applications, one does wonder on the number of computers that are in existence today. To think of it, the number is huge, what our real concern is with each of these computers comes the need of knowing how.

How to accomplish a certain processing? How can the computer be made efficient? Which softwares are needed and which are not? How to make our systems better?

Each computer needs various kinds of software to be installed on the hardware to make it intituitive enough to accomplish the tasks necessary. The most basic of any computer is the Operating System, which is the platform on which any computer becomes interactive and responsive to the user. the operating system is the software which brings any computer to life. There was a time when the list of operating systems was not all that long and selecting an operating system was simple. However, nowadays the number and sophistication of Operating Systems has grown manifolds and makes it a difficult choice to select one. When we do select one, more often then not, it turns out to be complicated. The perception of complexity of using any operating system belongs with the knowledge of the user in being able to manipulate it and customized it to oneself. By statistics Windows is THE MOST used operating system in the World. The latest flavour of Windows for personal computers being: Windows 7.
